The Arts and Crafts movement bagan in northern Europe in the middle of the ninteenth century. Traditional crafts, then treatened by mass industrialization and mechanization, were nurtured and recovered and served as the basis for a radical reworking of tradition. Among the theorists, who were also practioners, were John Ruskin, William Morris, Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo, Charles Ashbee, William Lethaby, Edward Schroeder Prior, Edgar Wood, Michel de Klerk, Bernhard Hoetger, Mary Watts, JPC de Bazel and August Endell. Their writings explain the human oneness with the world and the necessity for co-operation in society for the common good, production for use and beauty rather than solely for profit.
