Designer Violeta Villacorta travels back to the Cofán Community of Dureno in the Ecuadorian Amazon for a month in October to continue the creative project with the artisans. A project in the Cofán Community of Dureno-Sucumbios, Ecuadorian Amazon. Designer Violeta Villacorta is working with Cofán artisans to promote their arts and crafts as a source of a sustainable economy for the community, a rich culture and people who live in harmony with Mother Nature. The funds collected in July covered the materials and building of the Asociación Sukû Cofán Dureno Arts & Crafts Center, tools for the artisans, netbooks and internet service, as well as development of accessories and crafts. Funds are still needed to do capacity trainings for the artisans and community in the areas of business and marketing, in order for them to have the necessary tools for an effective sustainable economy; to install filtered water catchment systems that collect water from the daily rains to supply each family with clean drinking and cooking water in every home in Dureno and other Cofán communities deeper in the Amazon ~ a goal, among other needs, of the Cofán. Sustainability takes time in these areas that have been left on their own after the intrusion of extractive industries in their territories. We can give now, while they continue to flourish.
